  • Dear MPS Sailor,

Welcome to the second addition of the newsletter, thanks to all of the contributors and feel free to send Rick anything which you think would add some interest to the next addition. Overall, things are going really well, sales of boats are fabulous with orders up to no. 170, we are flying! In the UK we recently had the Dinghy Exhibition which created a lot of interest, there were loads of visitors to the stand and we have a phenomenal amount of demo's to do. One thing that really stood out was the standard of sailors looking at the boat, one notable name was Mark Asquith, Paul Brotherton's 49er crew who is looking for a new challenge. He was heard to say (While pointing at the Nationals Trophy) "That's Mine", within earshot of Sten !, why do I get the feeling that Sten's going to train twice as hard now ! On the Open meeting front there have been notable successes, Kev Anderson and Sten were 2nd and 3rd at the Steve Nicholson Trophy. Sten was 4th at the (Very windy) Hoo freezer, The MPS' also won the team prize (Sten, Kit and Myself). Unfortunately, due to adverse weather the first 9er open of the year at Rutland was cancelled. It was a brave decision and the organisers should be commended for it, there's nothing worse than turning up to an event and realising that there is no way that you will sail. On the European side, we are selling loads of boats into Switzerland, I have even heard that 3 are coming to the UK Nationals at Sunderland, it would be great to see some of the German fleet over as well. With the Europeans at Denia only a couple of weeks away, you should remember that you need to be a class member to compete, please look at the website for details. For the European contingent, get in contact with Paul Manning and he will organise payment in Euro's. Finally thanks to Simon Reynolds for all the effort he's put into cleaning up our class rules.

Good sailing, Graeme Oliver Musto Performance Skiff Class Chairman

It's not too late for an Easter Trip to Spain for the Europeans

Why not kick start your season with a trip to the Europeans at Denia in Spain. The entry list is already healthy with a number of travellers adding to the strong Spanish fleet.

20 - 30 degrees, good winds (we hope) and great hospitality.

The full details, NOR etc are on the web

New Class Rules now on the web and in force
Well, they might not be everyone's idea of essential bedtime reading, but for those of you who are intent on racing in MPS events this year you will need to be familiar with the amendments. So why was there the need to amend them I hear some of you ask. Well, the reasons are varied, but importantly they bring us up to date on a number of fronts. Firstly, the original rules were based on those taken from the 29er class, as they were deemed a good example of strict one-design rules. Secondly, since this time and, in the last year in particular, the class has witnessed solid growth and, with demonstrable evidence of many sailors seeking to 'customise' their boats to their liking. If left unchecked, the creep of customisation could have served to undermined the class.

In response to this, a pragmatic view had to be taken as to what was deemed healthy to protect both the letter and spirit of the one-design status, the integrity and longevity of the principal elements of the hull platform, the overall appearance of the boat, whilst also reflecting the needs of the sailors to make elements of boat control easier, without endorsement to fundamental performance advantages that could have been derived from some areas of customisation.

Whilst it is advisable to read the whole document, the principal areas of change and rewording can be viewed in Section C - 'Conditions for Racing' (especially C.2.2. Additions, Modifications and Replacements) and, Section G - 'Sails. The later section was reworded to allow competitors to use more than one sail in a regatta, as if, for example, it is blowing hard one day, some competitors might want to switch to their old kite. And for those of you with two mains, well you are just damned greedy!

For those of us lucky people competing in the forthcoming Europeans at Denia in Spain, random checks will be undertaken and the new rules enforced. So I would advise all sailors to ensure you are fully compliant and, that includes having national letters on your sails.

The History of the Musto Skiff
How did it all start? It was back in the 1980's when Nigel Musto first got to know Tim Tavinor when Nigel was sailing the 470 and Tim was sailing the Finn. They also sailed Etchells together in the mid 1990's.

At the Hamburg Boat Show in 1999 that Nigel was wandering around the show and came across a stand exhibiting a fascinating skiff prototype. The designer was a chap called Dr Joachim Happrecht and Nigel, intrigued by the design, stopped to chat about the skiff and find out more about it.

On returning to the UK, Nigel rang Tim and said, "I've found a boat that looks the DB's, you must go and see it!" As a result Tim arranged to meet Joachim after the show at Lake Garda. So Tim along with Luca Devoti (Tim's business partner) trundled off to Garda to check out this so called amazing boat.

After a whizz around Lake Garda, Luca and Tim were hooked! They decided that it was a fantastic boat and decided to take on the project of manufacturing and promoting it. Needing an identity for this new revelation, Tim gave Nigel the honour of naming the boat and hence it became the Musto Performance Skiff.

    What a great Dinghy Show
Well what a great two days at the Dinghy show. First of all welcome to the newsletter to all those who have signed up since speaking to us at the show. The Musto Skiff stand showed boat number 155 which is due to be shipped out to the USA .

On the stand we had flyers and stickers which disappeared at a rapid rate and there was plenty of interest generated by the DVD produced by Joerg Behrens. We also had some very high-profile sailors looking for a new challenge after the Olympics, so watch this space.

Thanks to all those who staffed the stand; Paul Manning, Rick Perkins, Matt Toone, Graeme Oliver, Simon Reynolds, Martin Boatman, Tim Chapman, Richard Stenhouse & Kit Stenhouse. Also thanks to Ovi for providing the metalwork to allow us to use the new panels showing the great photo's from Garda.
