Dear Rick,
Welcome to the new Musto Performance Skiff Newsletter.
With the class growing at such a rapid rate, it was decided
that we needed a new form of communication to keep you all
up to date with the happenings in the fleet. The newsletter
will include insights and profiles from the sailors, event
reports, manufacturer tips, important notices and other
useful info to help you get the best from the MPS and the
class association. A big thanks to Paul and Rick for
compiling this and to all of the people who have
contributed.
Don't forget to drop into the great stand for the MPS at
the Dinghy Show and to send your ideas for the next
e-Newsletter. Good sailing, Graeme Oliver Musto Performance
Skiff Class Chairman
Start planning your Easter Trip to Spain for the
Europeans
Denia is a beautiful town which stands on the
Mediterranean coast, between the cities of Valencia and
Alicante, where the sun shines 322 days a year and the
average temperature is 18º C or 65º F. It has a resident
population of about 33,000, although this number rises in
the summer months, when people from around the world come to
visit this wonderful land. Coming by the A7 Highway, take
exit 62.
Denia has 20 kilometres of beaches which are awarded the
European Blue Flag for their water quality, infrastructure
and services every year. To the north, the fine sand beaches
of Les Marines; to the south, the rocky area of Les Rotes,
with its spectacular coves of transparent waters. There´s a
promenade along Les Rotes wich takes about 45 min walking.
From there you will see the race area.

UK Nationals at Sunderland YC, by Kev Anderson |
 |
I'm sure you all know by now that the 2004 musto skiff
nationals will be held at Sunderland yacht club on the
27, 28, 29, 30, August. We up north intend to make this
the biggest and best Musto Skiff event there has been in
the UK so far.
All we ask of you is that you ALL come. That includes
all the sailors that live outside the UK. There is a
ferry terminal at North shields on the river Tyne. You
have easy access and no excuse.
The Yacht club at Sunderland is very impressive. It
was built about five years ago with the aid of a lottery
grant. I have been to many sailing clubs throughout the
country and Sunderland ranks as one of the best you can
find. The launching is right outside the club gates down
a good concrete slip way onto a flat sandy beach.
The sailing will speak for itself. You launch in
safety inside the harbour then after a short sail you
are on the open sea. Most of the time we sail on fairly
flat water with the prevailing wind being South West,
but some times we can have wind more cross or on shore
which gives a nice swell.

About Tim Tavinor of Ovington Boats |
 |
When asked to write for the Musto Performance Skiff
Class Association's e-newsletter, I decided to start by
introducing you in each instalment to who Ovington Boats
are, and their CV.
As Managing Director Tim Tavinor started sailing at
Oxford District School Sailing Association. Tim's was
very fortunate in having Nigel Vick as the driving force
behind the club at Farmoor Reservoir, as Nigel was very
supportive of children who wanted to learn to sail and
progress onto racing. Soon Tim was travelling around the
country participating in National Schools events.
The highlights of Tim's early racing career were
winning the OK and Laser School National championships.
Benefiting from Farmoor Reservoirs very active and
competitive Laser fleet, Tim participated in the Youth
National Championships where he finished 9th, 3rd and
finally winning the Hayling Island Championships.

To bimble or not to bimble, by Matt Toone |
 |
To bimble or not to bimble, that is the question! So what
is bimbling? I couldn't find a definition in my 120,000
word dictionary (4 inches thick) so in a nutshell: To
bimble: "Time spent tinkering (often pointlessly) with
your boat when on the shore, when you should be out
sailing".
However, a well bimbled and prepared boat whilst
simple, works well and efficiently and doesn't break.
Bimbling also runs hand in hand with maintaining your
kit to keep it running like velvet. Also, if you've
excelled the boat can look cool while adding that
personal touch. (if only people would bimble their
trailers so they all looked different when you first
back to the beach!).
