Musto
Performance Skiff e-Newsletter |
| Delivered
by Ovington Boats and the MPS Class Assocation. |
| Welcome
to the latest issue of the MPS newsletter. Firstly, a
big thanks to Pablo and his team for organising such a
fabulous Europeans at Denia, from what I have heard the
event was faultless and there are a lot of people wanting
to go back very soon. Congratulations to Sten for showing
everyone the way home again, he just seems to be able
to raise the bar every time someone gets close (Keep trying
Kev!!). Things are moving on at a fast pace on the boat
front, there are lots of new faces in the fleet and if
the weather in Britain ever decides to play ball we might
even get to race against each other! Fleets are now looking
very strong and people are joining all of the time with
some very high profile names committing to the events.
A big thanks from me to all of you who have joined the
class association, just in case you are wondering what
is happening with the money, we have come up with a number
of ideas of how to spend it. All of which will be announced
soon and will benefit both the class and the sailors.
And finally, Happy 50th Birthday to Ovi from everyone
in the MPS's, quite scary to think he can still sail 18's
at that ripe old age! Good
sailing, Graeme Oliver Musto Performance Skiff Class
Chairman

| European
Championship Club Nautico Denia |
With
sponsorship from the likes of Coca Cola and Heineken the
Musto Performance Skiff European Championships hosted
by Club Nautico Denia on the Mediterranean coast of Spain
was always going to be a winner. The hospitality of the
club was superb, with parties every night, and a spectator
boat giving good views for the families who had come to
Spain over the Easter holiday. The conditions varied between
a light to moderate wind, but it was the sea conditions
that were the biggest talking point with a swell running
at between 2.5 - 3m making for challenging conditions.
Racing started on time at a sociable 12.00 noon to allow
for people to recover from the night before, except for
one day when a 2 hour postponement was posted when it
became apparent that even the 8m RIB couldn't make it
through the surf ! The
practise race was won by local sailor Pablo Arandia,
who continued to perform strongly in his first full
season. However, the battle for the title would be between
Kevin Anderson, Richard Stenhouse and Ian Turnbull.
Racing got under way in a 10-12 knot breeze, and 3 metre
swell making for exhilarating sailing. Kevin Anderson
led around the first lap, closely followed by Richard
Stenhouse and Ian Turnbull. The sailors revelling in
the conditions. Kevin Anderson pulled out a big lead
on the first downwind leg, but Richard Stenhouse overhauled
him up the second beat in the testing conditions, to
post the win. The fleet made up of a number of nations
swept into the finish in the long Mediterranean swell.
The conditions continued to be superb for racing throughout
the event with a 12 - 15 knot wind the Musto Performance
Skiff´s flew on the downwind legs, some boats
occasionally coming completely out of the water. Kevin
Anderson holding a slim 1 point lead over Richard Stenhouse
going into day 3. The first two races of day 3 were
very close at the front, but Stenhouse showed a slight
edge over the rest of the fleet in the testing conditions.
The Musto Performance Skiffs made for spectacular viewing
for the numerous boats watching, as they planned at
high speed upwind and surfed downwind on the long swell.
The day belonged to Richard Stenhouse, who always managed
to stay in control, and by the end of the day had moved
into an unbeatable position overall.
The
final race of the Musto Performance Skiff European Championships
2004 was held in 8 knots of wind and brilliant Spanish
blue sky. Pablo Arandia ESP showed excellent speed to
round the windward mark first, closely followed by Kevin
Anderson. The two sailors battled hard for the win,
with Pablo holding on for a memorable win at his home
club, with many local spectators cheering as he crossed
the line.
The
prize giving was held shortly after racing, and a big
thanks must go to Club Nautico Denia for hosting the
event, Maria Torrijo as principal race officer and to
the sponsors which included Denia tourist board, Valencia
local government, Real Federacion Espaanola de Vela,
Regional Spanish Sailing Federation, Grefusa, Coca Cola,
Heineken, Solan de Cabras, Panorama Video Productions,
Halcon, Ogisaka Garden, CHG and MR Hotels. Read

| Please
don't wait until your first event to join ... |
Membership
of the class association is now at record levels but there
are still owners out there who have not signed-up.
The class association in partnership with Ovington Boats
have agreed to run the class as an "open shop"
making access to all information open to all including
prospective owners.
However we do require that you are a
member of the class association to participate in events.
Please don't leave it until you attend your first event
to join as this makes unnecessary administration. Also
this doesn't allow the association to make plans.
The sooner we have the money in the
better we can plan it's effective spend. It's your class
please support it by joining the class association.
